## What is building-integrated solar (BIPV)?

BIPV means the solar cells form a working part of the building itself, not an addition sitting above it. Instead of framed modules clamped to a roof, the photovoltaic material is the roof tile, the standing-seam metal sheet, the glazed canopy over an entrance, or the rainscreen cladding on a wall. It generates electricity and does the job of that surface at the same time.

Products range from slate-look solar tiles to semi-transparent glass units that let daylight through while producing power. Because the panel is the finish, architects often specify BIPV where the look of bolt-on arrays would be unwelcome, such as a prominent frontage or a sensitive setting.

## How does BIPV differ from bolt-on panels?

Standard rooftop solar is mounted on rails above a completed, weatherproof roof. The panels and the roof covering are separate systems, which keeps replacement straightforward and generally costs less per kWp. BIPV combines the two, so the solar element also has to keep water out and meet the same building standards as the fabric it replaces.

That dual role is the main trade-off. BIPV typically carries a higher price and needs earlier design coordination, but it removes a separate roof or cladding cost and can reach areas a rail-mounted array cannot use, such as vertical walls.

## When does BIPV suit a commercial project?

BIPV makes most sense on a new build or a deep refurbishment, when the fabric is being specified anyway and the solar surface can replace a material you would otherwise buy. Retrofitting BIPV onto a sound existing roof rarely adds up, because you would discard a working covering to install it.

It also suits projects where appearance carries weight, such as a flagship office or a building in a conservation area. Funding options still apply: a PPA, hire purchase, lease or outright purchase can cover BIPV as they would a conventional array, subject to the funder assessing the product.

**Can a PPA fund a BIPV installation?**

It can in principle. A PPA, lease, hire purchase or outright purchase can each fund BIPV, and under a PPA you pay a fixed rate per kWh guaranteed at least 30% below the grid, with the system becoming yours for £1 at the end of the term.
