# DNO approval and G99 for commercial solar explained

Before a commercial solar or battery system can connect to the grid, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) must approve it — usually through the G99 process for larger installations. It protects the network and ensures your system operates safely. Under a PPA, the provider manages the whole application for you.

## What the DNO does

The DNO runs the local electricity network. Any generation connected to that network needs their sign-off so it does not compromise safety or stability. For commercial-scale solar and battery, that typically means a G99 application.

## How the process works

The application sets out the system size and how it will operate. The DNO assesses the local network capacity and either approves the connection, sometimes with conditions, or specifies any reinforcement needed. Timescales vary with system size and local capacity.

## We handle it for you

DNO approval sounds daunting but it is a normal part of every commercial project. As part of a PPA, we prepare and manage the G99 application and any conditions, so you do not have to.

## Frequently asked questions

**How long does DNO approval take?**

It depends on system size and local network capacity — smaller systems are quicker, larger ones can take longer if the network needs assessment. We manage the timeline and keep you informed.

**What is the difference between G98 and G99?**

G98 covers small installations; G99 covers larger ones, which most commercial solar and battery systems fall under. We identify and handle the right process for your project.
