## What EICR and periodic testing cover

A solar installation is part of the building’s electrical system and ages like the rest of it. Periodic inspection and testing examines the DC and AC wiring, isolators, connectors, earthing and bonding, protective devices and the inverter connection, then verifies them by test rather than by eye. Anything unsafe or not to standard is recorded and rated.

The outcome is a formal report, such as an Electrical Installation Condition Report, that states whether the installation is satisfactory and lists any items to put right. The report also grades any faults by how serious they are, so you know what must be fixed and what is merely worth improving.

## Why businesses need it on record

Landlords, insurers and some tariff or export arrangements expect evidence that the electrical installation, solar included, has been inspected and is safe. Regular testing supports those duties, and it catches degraded cabling, loose terminals or failed protection before they become a fire or shock risk on the roof.

Keeping the report on file also makes the next inspection easier, since the provider can see what was found last time and how the installation has changed. Insurers sometimes ask to see it after a claim or at renewal.

## Who should carry it out

This is qualified work. Inspection and testing of a PV installation should be done by a competent, qualified provider working to the relevant standards, who can certify the results properly.
