Pigeons and gulls like to nest in the sheltered gap under solar panels. Their droppings, feathers and nests soil and shade the array, block drainage, and can chew wiring, which raises a fire risk. Mesh clips fitted around the panel edges, sometimes with spikes, seal the gap and keep birds out.
Why do birds nest under solar panels?
A rooftop array leaves a gap of several centimetres between the panels and the roof surface. It is shaded, dry, warm from the equipment and out of reach of predators, which makes it close to ideal for pigeons and, on some sites, gulls to roost and nest. Once one pair settles, others tend to follow, and a colony can build up over a couple of seasons.
Commercial roofs are especially exposed because the arrays are large, often flat-mounted, and rarely inspected up close. Birds can be well established before anyone notices from the ground.
What harm does a bird infestation actually cause?
The mess is the obvious problem. Droppings and nesting debris shade cells and cut output, and acidic droppings can etch glass and corrode frames and clips over time. Nests and feathers block roof drainage channels, which can lead to ponding water and leaks.
There is also a wiring risk. Birds peck and pull at the DC cables and connectors under the panels, and damaged insulation on a live DC circuit is a recognised fire hazard. Pest droppings are a health matter too, carrying bacteria and parasites, which becomes a staff issue if anyone accesses the roof. Left alone, a colony rarely gets better on its own.
How does bird-proofing work on a commercial roof?
The standard fix is proprietary mesh clipped to the outer edge of the panels, closing the perimeter gap without touching or drilling the modules. The clips grip the frame, so nothing pierces the panel or roof membrane. On gull-prone sites, spikes or wires may be added on nearby ledges and ridge lines to stop them landing.
Fitting is best done after the roof and array are cleared and cleaned, and it should not obstruct airflow or panel drainage. Because it means working at height around live electrical equipment, use an installer who understands both roof safety and solar. Building bird-proofing in when the system is first installed is cheaper than retrofitting after a colony arrives.

Does bird mesh damage the solar panels or roof?
No. Proper mesh clips onto the panel frames, so it does not drill into the modules or the roof membrane. It should be fitted so it never blocks the airflow or drainage the panels need. Use an installer familiar with solar.
Is bird-proofing worth it if I only see a few pigeons?
Usually yes. A few birds often become a colony, and it is cheaper to seal the gap early than to clear an established infestation, repair chewed wiring and lose output. Prevention also avoids the fire and drainage risks.
