Solar and battery systems interact with your site's power quality through their inverters, which must meet grid compliance standards to avoid disturbing the supply. Well-specified inverters generate clean, stable output, and a battery can support certain sites by smoothing demand, though it is not a substitute for a UPS.
What power quality means on site
Power quality describes how clean and stable your electricity supply is, covering voltage level, frequency, waveform distortion (harmonics) and momentary dips or spikes. Poor power quality can trip sensitive equipment, shorten the life of motors and electronics, and cause nuisance faults. It matters most on sites with variable industrial loads or a lot of electronic equipment.
Any generation or storage you add connects through an inverter, and that inverter shapes the power it delivers. This is why the equipment specification, not just the panel or battery, determines the effect on your supply.
How compliant inverters protect the supply
Grid-connected inverters in the UK must comply with connection standards, including Engineering Recommendation G99 for larger installations, which set limits on harmonic distortion, voltage and how the inverter behaves during grid disturbances. A compliant inverter produces a clean sine wave output and disconnects safely if the grid moves outside acceptable limits, so a properly installed solar system should not degrade your power quality.
The safeguard is using certified equipment installed and commissioned correctly. Cutting corners on inverter quality or installation is where power-quality problems actually arise, rather than from solar generation itself.
What a battery can and cannot do
A battery with the right inverter can help smooth the load your site draws from the grid, for example by shaving demand peaks, which can ease strain on your connection. Some advanced systems can also provide limited support during brief disturbances. This is genuine, but it should not be oversold.
A standard energy-storage battery is not the same as an uninterruptible power supply or a standby generator. If your operation needs guaranteed continuity through an outage, that requires equipment designed and specified for backup, which is a separate conversation from energy storage for cost savings. Confirm your exact resilience needs before assuming a battery covers them.
