Solar carports and canopies for business

A solar carport is a raised steel canopy over a car park with solar panels as its roof. It generates electricity while sheltering vehicles, and pairs naturally with EV charging. Carports suit businesses with large parking areas but limited or unsuitable roof space, turning otherwise dead tarmac into a generating asset.

How solar carports work

A solar carport covers standard parking bays with an engineered steel frame that holds panels overhead at a tilt. The structure is designed to shed rain and carry wind and snow loads, so it needs proper foundations and structural sign-off rather than a bolt-on frame. Electrically it behaves like any other array, feeding an inverter and then your building or the grid.

Because the panels sit on purpose-built steelwork, orientation and tilt can be optimised for output rather than dictated by an existing roof. That often means a carport array performs well, though the steelwork adds cost compared with a rooftop system of the same capacity.

Pairing with EV charging

Car parks are where vehicles sit for hours, which makes them the obvious place to charge them. A carport can feed EV chargers directly beneath it, so a proportion of the electricity used to charge staff, fleet or customer vehicles comes from the panels overhead rather than the grid. This lowers charging costs and strengthens the case for both installations at once.

Pairing solar, storage and charging also helps manage the load a bank of chargers places on your supply. Rather than upgrading your grid connection to cover peak charging demand, on-site generation and a battery can shoulder part of it, though the exact design depends on your charger count and connection capacity.

When a carport makes sense

Carports suit businesses with large, sunny parking areas and roofs that are unavailable: too old, too shaded, north-facing, structurally weak, or already committed to plant. Retail parks, offices, hotels, hospitals and distribution sites often fit. The visible canopy also signals investment in clean energy to customers and staff.

The trade-off is capital cost per kWp, which is higher than rooftop because of the structure. Funding routes such as a PPA can remove that upfront barrier, since the funding partner meets the build cost and you pay only for the electricity generated. Whether a carport beats a roof comes down to your specific site.

Often yes, because they are new structures rather than roof-mounted panels. Requirements vary by location, size and whether the site is in a sensitive area, so confirm with your local planning authority early in the process.

Can a solar carport charge electric vehicles at night?

The panels only generate in daylight, but pairing the carport with battery storage lets you store daytime generation and charge vehicles after dark. Without storage, night-time charging draws from the grid.
