Commercial solar panel types explained

By the PPA Funding team Last updated

Most commercial systems today use monocrystalline panels because they are the most efficient, producing more power from a given roof area. Polycrystalline and thin-film alternatives exist, but for the majority of UK business roofs, high-efficiency monocrystalline panels give the best return.

Monocrystalline panels

Made from single-crystal silicon, monocrystalline panels are the most efficient mainstream option, so they generate more electricity per square metre. That matters where roof area is finite, which is most commercial sites. They are the standard choice for quality installations.

Polycrystalline and thin-film

Polycrystalline panels are slightly less efficient and now less common. Thin-film has niche uses, such as very lightweight or flexible applications, but lower efficiency means it needs more area for the same output. For most business roofs, neither beats good monocrystalline.

What actually matters

Panel type is only one factor. Quality, warranty, the inverter, and above all a design matched to your roof and load, determine real-world performance. We specify appropriate, well-warranted equipment as part of your proposal.

Frequently asked questions

Which panels will you use on our roof?

We specify high-efficiency, well-warranted panels appropriate to your roof and goals — typically quality monocrystalline modules for the best output from the available area.

Are more efficient panels always better?

Efficiency helps most where roof space is limited, letting you fit more capacity. On very large roofs, total system design and cost-effectiveness matter more than squeezing out the last percent of efficiency.
