Commercial solar mounts differently on each roof type. Flat roofs use ballasted or fixed frames that tilt the panels; standing-seam metal roofs allow non-penetrating clamps; profiled metal and tiled roofs use fixings suited to the material. Each is workable, but the roof's condition and load capacity decide suitability.
Flat roofs
Flat commercial roofs are common on warehouses, factories and retail units, and they suit solar well. Panels sit on mounting frames angled to catch the sun, typically facing south, or in an east-west layout that spreads generation across the day and packs more panels onto the space. Frames are usually ballasted, held down by weight rather than penetrating the waterproof membrane, which avoids piercing the roof.
The main checks are the roof's ability to carry the extra weight, including ballast, and the condition and remaining life of the waterproofing. It is far easier to address a tired membrane before panels go on than after, so a flat-roof project starts with structural and roofing assessments.
Metal roofs
Metal roofs come in two broad types. Standing-seam roofs have raised interlocking seams that accept purpose-made clamps, allowing panels to be fixed without drilling through the sheet, which keeps the roof watertight and is quick to install. Profiled or trapezoidal metal sheets instead use brackets fixed into the roof with sealed fasteners, engineered to keep the seal intact.
Metal roofs are generally strong and well suited to solar, but the age of the sheeting and the strength of its fixings matter. Older cladding or corroded fasteners need assessing, because the mounting is only as sound as the roof it attaches to.
Tiled roofs and choosing an approach
Smaller commercial premises, offices and mixed-use buildings often have pitched tiled roofs. Here, mounting hooks fix to the rafters beneath the tiles and support a rail system that carries the panels, with tiles cut or dressed around the hooks to stay weathertight. It is a proven method but more labour-intensive than clamping onto a flat or metal roof.
Across all roof types, a structural survey and a roof-condition check come first. They confirm the roof can take the load, has enough life left, and which mounting system suits the material. Getting that assessment done early avoids surprises and lets the system be designed for the roof you actually have.
