Commercial solar maintenance: what’s actually involved?

By the PPA Funding team Last updated

Commercial solar is low-maintenance but not no-maintenance. Keeping a system at peak output means remote monitoring, occasional cleaning, periodic inspections and prompt repairs. Under a PPA all of this is included, so you get the savings without managing the upkeep.

Monitoring comes first

Modern systems are monitored remotely, so any drop in performance is spotted early — often before you would ever notice it. This is the single most important part of keeping a system productive.

Cleaning and inspections

Panels are largely self-cleaning in UK rain, but periodic cleaning and visual inspections keep output high and catch issues like loose fixings or shading. Inverters and batteries are checked to keep them within warranty and running efficiently.

Why it matters

A neglected system quietly loses output and value. Proactive maintenance protects both. Under a PPA the provider carries that responsibility, because their return depends on the system performing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to arrange maintenance under a PPA?

No. Under a PPA the provider fully owns and maintains the system, including monitoring, cleaning, inspections and repairs, at no extra cost to you.

How often do commercial panels need cleaning?

It varies with location and dust or pollution levels, but many sites need only occasional cleaning as UK rain does much of the work. Monitoring flags when performance suggests a clean is due.
