Guide

Do you need planning permission for commercial solar?

By the PPA Funding team Last updated

Many commercial rooftop solar installations fall under permitted development and do not need a full planning application, though there are limits and exceptions — for example on listed buildings or in conservation areas. Ground-mounted and larger systems more often need permission. We assess and handle this for your site.

Rooftop solar

Roof-mounted commercial solar frequently qualifies as permitted development, meaning no full application is required. There are conditions — around size, projection and location — and exceptions apply to listed buildings and conservation or protected areas.

Ground-mounted solar

Ground-mounted arrays are more likely to need planning permission, particularly above certain sizes. The assessment considers land use, visual impact and local policy.

We check and manage it

As part of designing your system we confirm the planning position for your specific site and building, and manage any application or approval that is needed, so it is one less thing to worry about.

Frequently asked questions

Does my listed building or conservation area change things?

Yes. Listed buildings and conservation areas have additional restrictions, so a full application or listed building consent may be required. We check your specific situation before proceeding.

Who handles the planning process?

We do. Part of delivering your system is confirming the planning position and managing any application needed, alongside the DNO approval.
