Before a commercial solar or battery system can connect to the grid, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) must approve it — usually through the G99 process for larger installations. It protects the network and ensures your system operates safely. Under a PPA, the provider manages the whole application for you.
What the DNO does
The DNO runs the local electricity network. Any generation connected to that network needs their sign-off so it does not compromise safety or stability. For commercial-scale solar and battery, that typically means a G99 application.
How the process works
The application sets out the system size and how it will operate. The DNO assesses the local network capacity and either approves the connection, sometimes with conditions, or specifies any reinforcement needed. Timescales vary with system size and local capacity.
