Why the inverter is the weak point
Panels often carry long warranties and can run for decades, but inverters work hard every daylight hour and typically have a shorter service life. Heat, dust, cooling-fan wear and electrical stress all take a toll. When an inverter faults or fails, the string or the whole system stops generating until it is fixed, so a fault here costs more than most.
Common signs are error codes on the display or app, unexpected shutdowns, reduced output, or the unit running hot or noisy. Any of these is worth a professional check, since the sooner it is looked at, the less generation you lose while it sits idle.
What inverter servicing involves
A provider checks the unit’s error log and firmware, confirms the cooling and ventilation are clear, inspects DC and AC connections for heat damage or corrosion, and verifies the inverter is operating within its parameters. String inverters, optimisers and microinverters each have their own checks, all carried out to the relevant standards by a qualified provider.
They also confirm the inverter is talking to your monitoring, since a unit that has silently dropped offline can leave you unaware the system has stopped earning.
Repair or replace?
Sometimes a service and a part sorts it. Where a unit is beyond economic repair, out of warranty or no longer supported, replacement is usually the better call, and a newer inverter can be more efficient and easier to monitor.
