By the PPA Funding team Updated
At end of life, or when a building changes use, a commercial solar system needs taking safely out of service and removing. PPA Funding does not decommission systems itself; we connect you with specialists who isolate, dismantle and remove arrays responsibly, and pass on your no-obligation enquiry.
When a system needs decommissioning
Not every system stays in service for its full design life. A building may be sold, demolished or repurposed, an array may be damaged beyond economic repair, or an owner may want to clear a roof or field for a new installation. In each case the existing system has to be shut down and taken out safely rather than simply abandoned.
A system left in place but neglected is a liability, because the DC side can stay live and connections can degrade. Formally decommissioning it removes that risk and frees the site.
Doing it safely and responsibly
A provider will isolate the system from the grid and any battery, discharge and make it safe, then dismantle the panels, inverters, mounting and cabling. Panels, electronics and metals can often be sent for recycling or reuse rather than landfill, and a responsible provider will handle waste under the relevant regulations. Where a grid connection is being given up, the network operator usually needs notifying.
Arranging removal through PPA Funding
Tell us the system size, its location and why it is being removed. We introduce you to specialists who decommission and strip out commercial solar, and pass on your enquiry for a no-obligation quote. Any recovered value in the equipment is between you and the provider to agree.
If you are clearing the site for a replacement system, mention it when you enquire, as some providers can quote the removal and the new installation together. Keeping the paperwork from a proper decommissioning also helps if the building is later sold, as it shows the old system was removed correctly.
PPA Funding is an independent introducer — we do not carry out the work. Tell us about your site and we will source and vet a suitable specialist, who quotes and contracts with you directly. No obligation. Request a quote →
Frequently asked questions
Is there any value in an old solar system?
Sometimes. Working panels, inverters and metals can have resale or scrap value that may offset removal costs. A provider can assess this when they quote. PPA Funding introduces you to them and passes on your enquiry, with no obligation.
Do you remove the system yourselves?
No. PPA Funding is a Shrewsbury-based introducer covering the UK. We connect you with a vetted specialist who carries out the decommissioning and removal, and pass on your enquiry so they can quote you directly.
